The Overshoot
Funding Challenge

The Overshoot Funding Challenge will accelerate research to manage climate overshoot risks by funding frontier research programs at twelve leading organizations featured at the Funder Summit in San Francisco. Their work is indispensable for a safe climate future, but remains underfunded relative to its importance and their absorptive capacity. These organizations have collectively raised $65M towards aggregate 2026 program budgets of $145M, leaving an unmet need of $80M. Our goal is to halve this gap by mobilizing $40M in new philanthropic commitments by the end of Q3. Our “reach goal” is to fully fund these frontier research programs by raising the entire $80M.

Scaled and sustained funding for these research programs will deliver major impact by 2030. In the base case, they would dramatically improve understanding of overshoot risks – their likelihood, magnitude, and timeframes for action – and the potential tools to manage them. In the upside case, they would unlock safe, effective, and governable tools to predict and prevent catastrophic climate risks.
