Session 28
Methane Removal: Potential Lever to Address Near-Term Warming?
October 6th, 2026
Methane is responsible for about 30% of warming, and rapid emissions cuts are essential. But, cuts alone may not be sufficient to address the rise in atmospheric concentrations — in addition to hard-to-abate anthropogenic sources, emissions from natural ecosystems are rising, and changes in atmospheric chemistry may be increasing methane’s lifetime in the atmosphere, potentially eroding the planet’s natural methane “sink". These challenges are motivating new research into methane removal. In this session, Dr. Megan Melamed, who oversees the world’s leading methane removal research program, explains why we urgently need to assess whether methane removal could be safe and feasible, how it could work, and key research priorities moving forward.
