Could Marine Cloud Brightening Help Blunt the Next Super El Nino?
August 25, 2026
A large, perhaps record-breaking, El Niño event is predicted to occur in the coming months, likely causing trillions of dollars in global economic damages. Dr. Kate Ricke will present her group’s recent work researching the potential to use marine cloud brightening in the Southeast Subtropical Pacific to disrupt the growth cycle of El Niños before they mature, and the research agenda required to determine whether El Niño modification is a viable option for reducing climate risk.
